Golden Globes 2013

So in an hour or so the 2013 Golden Globes will begin and will kick off another award season where people in the film industry shamelessly give each other shiny awards and celebrate all that film and television has to offer.  They will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler which should be good and quite different from the host of the past few years Ricky Gervais.  Gervais shocked American audiences with his laid back and cheeky ways and I would imagine Fey and Poehler will be much more tame in comparison.  Personally I love award shows and my main three favourites at the start of the year are The Golden Globes, The Baftas and of course The Academy Awards that finishes off the award season.  I always make my predictions before the winners are announced and sometimes I do really well and other times my mojo has been on the blink and I only get a few right.  Quite often who I think will win differs from who I would like to win and so for each category I have included both and I will find out tomorrow when I watch the awards (in the UK it will finish around 4am and I need my beauty sleep) just how much I have embarrassed myself.  So read on to find out my predicted winners for the 2013 Golden Globe Awards, who actually won and whether I predicted right or not.

SPOILER ALERT ------I have now updated this with the winners and so please do not read on if you have yet to watch the awards and do not know who won or if you're not bothered anyway keep calm and carry on.

So it was an average result for my predictions as I had 15 out of 25 correct but there were some nice surprises with Quentin Tarantino winning for the best screenplay.  Overall I was enjoyed the show and there were some hilarious moments from hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in their monologue at the start of the ceremony.  Tina Fey's shining moment came when she told Anne Hathaway how amazing she was in Les Miserables and that she had not seen someone so lonely and abandoned since Anne was on stage with James Franco at the Oscars a statement I could not agree more with.  However, Amy Poehler cracked me up with her comment about Kathryn Bigelow and Zero Dark Thirty that when it comes to torture she had to trust a lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.  They were what I expected as hosts and much tamer than Ricky Gervais but still funny and worked well.  It did feel a little rushed at times with them almost pushing people off stage if they thanked too many people off stage if they thanked too many people.  Before they even left the mic the next presenters were right behind them which was a little rushed.  However, I do understand the reasoning as they have a limited time and some people do rattle on and I did feel for Jodie Foster's youngest son during Daniel Day-Lewis' speech where he looked so beyond bored, bless him! Overall I enjoyed the show and it was a nice kick off to the awards season, I was really happy Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence won as I think they are amazing and Quentin Tarantino won a well deserved Golden Globe for writing Django Unchained.

Top Moments of Golden Globes 2013

  • President of the Foreign Press telling Bradley Cooper to call her maybe.
  • Adele's North London accent gracing the stage with "awww my God" followed by "we've been pissing ourselves laughing all night".  It was a refreshing change from the classy, distinguished usual British speeches from actors such as Damien Lewis and Daniel Day-Lewis.
  • Kevin Costner's weird speech that although it was a very sweet felt more like he had got confused and thought he had actually won the lifetime achievement award as he talked more about his body of work  and barely mentioned the film he had won for.
  • Amy Poehler referring to Bill Clinton as Hilary Clinton's husband.
  • Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrel pretending they haven't seen the performances of such greats as Mariel Streep 'you get out of here'.
  • Jennifer Lawrence's speech - "I beat Meryl"..."Harvey thank you for killing whoever you had to kill to get me up here".
  • Jodie Foster's speech was amazing and had me and many others in tears as there were many tissue's being reached for in the audience.  It was classy, important and relevant.  Take notes Lena Dunham here is a woman who knew she was going to get an award and still she did not read off a piece of paper.
  • Lena Dunham saying she totally wasn't expecting to win whilst whipping out a TYPED speech, yeah you sure had no suspicions you may win did you Lena.  I get people would be nervous especially when they are just starting out and do not want to forget anyone but I hate written speeches.  The best speeches are sincere and a visceral reaction to the moment where they are close to loosing it and you truly see how much it means to them.  Dunham's second speech was better as she used the paper less but maybe next time she could loose the paper.
