Dr Cahill is on the search of a photogenic Doctor to be the face of the hospital and it Alex and Jackson are both in the running so they are being followed around by photographers. Jo and Stephanie become even more competitive, Stephanie rooting for Jackson and Jo backing Alex which leads to him questioning his relationship with her as purely friendship. Alex and Jackson both are working on a transgender patient whose father does not understand why his daughter wants to become a man. April goes on a ride along with Matthew, the hot paramedic and gets Jackson to open up the ER to help save a hit and run victim. They almost get busted by Cahill but Meredith saves the day by her inability to operate the new high tech patient records system. After Richard and Callie take a very amusing trip to spy on Portland General Hospital which is a member of the company that wants to purchase the hospital. Callie is horrified by what she sees and urges the other Plane Crash victims to band together to buy the hospital themselves. After Jackson sees April kissing Matthew he looks a little taken aback even though he is walking off arm in arm with Stephanie. I really hope April and Jackson get back together as they are so sweet together.
Grey's Anatomy - Season Nine Episode Thirteen - Bad Blood
Dr Cahill's latest contribution is to install cameras around the hospital to monitor patient treatment and to reorganise the ORs for maximum efficiency but backfires as no-one knows where anything is. Cristina and Leah work on a young man who is critically injured but is a Jehovah witness and so they cannot give him the blood he desperately needs. This leads Leah to come close to giving him blood but she gets busted by the Doctor watching through the camera. April and Derek spend all their time trying to make cuts in order to save the ER but Cahill says the only way to save the hospital is to sell it and she is there to get it ready. Arizona, Callie and Alex try to help a girl who just had a hip replacement to get up and walk but she is too angry and depressed. Meredith gets scared when she thinks something is wrong with the baby until Bailey tells her it's normal and is just the baby kicking.
Grey's Anatomy - Season Nine Episode Twelve - Walking on a Dream
The Doctors have to contend with a financial adviser, Dr Alana Cahill, who is there to try and find ways for the hospital to save money. It turns out Cahill used to be a student of Richard's but she avoids him like the plague when he wishes to catch up. Meanwhile, Arizona is suffering from phantom limb syndrome which Owen tries to help her with leading to a hilarious scene in which Owen yells at Alex during a surgery, 'Dr Karev, I am the Chief of Surgery, this is an order, stab Doctor Robins in the foo right now'. Typically that is the moment that Cahill decides to walk in but did not make it any less funny. Meredith tries her best to deal with all the emotions of pregnancy including an increased libido and crying when she is both angry and happy. Meredith is able to fly on a plane in order to get a liver for her patient after Shane messes up several times. April teaches Stephanie how to run the ER and catches the eye of a hot paramedic. However, Cahill announces that the only way to save the hospital is to close the ER and so April's hard work is for nothing. I really liked this episode and it was nice to see April back in the swing of things.
Grey's Anatomy - Season Nine Episode Eleven - The End is the Beginning is the End
The Judge finally makes a ruling on the case regarding the plane crash and are awarded $15 million each which is a little surprising to each person. Callie wants to celebrate but it comes across a little awkward as she was the only one who wasn't actually in the crash and although she has suffered with the loss of Mark and Arizona she still did not go through what they went through. However, she talks them around and they go out for dinner, Meredith tells them she is pregnant and they talk about all the things they can now do. Whilst this is going on Owen is being informed that the insurance company will not pay as there is a loop hole about the number of attendings was exceeded when Arizona took Karev's place. So drama will ensue as the hospital will go out of business, obviously this will resolve in some way as no hospital no show. Elsewhere, Arizona buts heads with Avery when he treats one of Mark's patients and changes the plan. Derek plays ping pong with Shane as physical therapy for his hand but things get competitive especially when Karev and Jo start betting on them. Jo and Karev have now become best buds and she has been staying over but apparently platonically. This leads to the hilarious case of mistaken identity when Owen feels her up in the kitchen thinking she is Cristina. I am really glad Owen and Cristina are back together, they have the best divorce ever. I also like the friendship between Jo and Karev as it is very sweet and although they say they are like brother and sister I would be surprised if they don't hook up at some point. Although part of me misses the friendship between Mark and Callie and it would be nice to have that for Karev. Either way I am looking forward to seeing where this story line goes.
Grey's Anatomy - Season Nine Episode Ten - Things We Said Today
It was a little bit like Sons of Anarchy meets Grey's Anatomy this week when a motorcycle gang crash and the doctors get paged from the wedding to come and treat them. Owen ensures security is on hand to help as the matriarch of the gang is on the prowl for Stuart a rider who may have caused the accident. However, it was only to give him his own crest and enrol him into the gang as he is part of their family and hurt. It was a nice moment and highlighted the different worlds that they exist in. We find out Adele's fate with Bailey and Grey doing their best to save her life. They do their best and succeed but when Richard shows up as Bailey is having her first dance as a married woman Meredith realises what has happened and holds him as he tries to stay strong for Bailey. It was a very touching moment and demonstrated James Pickens Jr acting chops. Meanwhile everyone is waiting at the wedding wondering where Bailey is. Arizona, a little sensitive over Callie's comments about running to Bailey, books a room for them to have sex for the first time since the plane crash. Although she tries she just isn't ready but in a very sweet moment asks Callie not to run. Cristina and Owen try to decide whether to divorce or not and Shane hilariously believes that April is making a pass at him. Jo and Karev bond over their messed up childhoods and after getting drunk hijack a hotel room. I really like them together as Jo seems just as independent as Karev which is what he needs as his past relationships where he has largely had to take care of them. I look forward to seeing where this is going.
Grey's Anatomy - Season Nine Episode Nine - Run, Baby, Run
With Bailey's impending wedding just days away she is busy making last minute plans which include recruiting Arizona, Callie and Meredith to be her bridesmaids and enlisting April to take care of her patients. Meredith convinces Derek to undergo surgery but butts heads with his sister Lizzie. Neve Campbell who plays Lizzie is a good edition to the cast and tries to connect with Meredith as a sister which with her recent loss of Lexie is hard for Meredith to do. Cristina finds out Owen asked for the divorce because of the law suit which leads her to confront him about her desire for them to get back together. I was so happy they finally talked as I really like them together. April is worried that her and Jackson will not be able to help themselves at Baileys wedding with them both all dressed up so they each recruit an intern to be their date. However, as Jackson was planning on going stag with Alex he now has to get a date for him too. Inevitably his date is with Jo who he has a run in earlier in the episode where Jo messes up in surgery after he lets her perform a procedure. This was predictable as I have been waiting for the two to get together and I would imagine that this will be continued in the new year. Arizona chastises Alex and tells him he is now a teacher, if his students fail so does he. Callie and Jackson successfully perform surgery on Derek but we will have to wait for next year to find out if Derek will have more use of his hand. Callie also struggles with Arizona and finally lets her have it after she complains about not going to the wedding because she can only wear flats. It has been a long time coming and Callie let Arizona know that their whole life has become about her leg which ends with her yelling she hasn't had sex in five months because of her leg. Arizona's reaction was priceless and it was nice to see them finally talking even if it is with raised voices. Earlier in the episode Callie takes her frustration out on Bailey too when she tells her the horrors of marriage which leads Bailey to have second thoughts. When Bailey is late they all begin to question whether she is coming at all but what they don't know is Adele has been rushed to the hospital coughing up blood and Bailey is doing her best to save her life. It was to be expected that Shonda Rhimes would leave the episode before the Christmas hiatus on a cliffhanger. I cannot imagine Ben will leave Bailey after he finds out why she has not showed up but I think it is a good way to finalise the storyline between Adele and Richard. It has been announced that Loretta Devine will appear in her final episode at the beginning of the year so it does not bode well for her survival. I am looking forward to the next episode which will not be until January 10th.
Grey's Anatomy - Season Nine Episode Eight - Love Turns You Upside Down
It's the interns first 24 hour shift and we get the opportunity to learn a bit more about each of them. Meredith is assigned Heather who is desperate to do anything remotely medical but is given the task of talking to Derek's sisters about the possibility of donating a nerve. Jo and Alex work together on a premature baby, Leah and Stephanie compete to get the chance to scrub in with Cristina and Shane is on lumps and bumps duty with April. I actually really liked this episode and it was nice to get the opportunity to learn more about the interns. I am not too sure about Leah and Stephanie as the only ones to really be shown in a negative light as they were more preoccupied with their own desire to scrub in than actually taking care of their patients leading to them being banned from the OR. As enjoyable as the episode was it was incredibly predictable as I was waiting for two inevitable conclusions to the narrative; for Jo to confess her troubled childhood and Derek's sister to show up to save the day. However, I was expecting the sister to be Amelia from Private Practice but rather it was Lizzie played by Neve Campbell. Shane learnt how to relate to patients from April which led to him getting chosen to help with Derek's surgery. All in all it was an enjoyable episode, Shane, Heather and Jo all had their opportunity to rant and have their say and we got to see Grey's Anatomy: The New Class.
Grey's Anatomy - Season Nine Episode Seven - I Was Made For Lovin' You
Yeyyyy Arizona is back!!!! She is not just back in the hospital at work but back as in her old self, well for the most part. It's her first day back and the other doctors try their best not to overwhelm her. It was so good to see Arizona back and her and Callie doing better. Owen has a meeting regarding the law suit and tries to work out what the board and lawyers are not telling him. When he finally works out why they are not bothered that he is married to one of the victims he makes a decision to get a divorce which was so sad as Cristina wanted to get back together. I really want them to make up as although they had their problems they were really sweet together and helped each other through a lot of stuff. April thinks she may be pregnant which leads Jackson to propose. Jackson was so sweet and April in her usual oblivious way hurts his feelings. Callie works tirelessly to work out a plan to fix Derek's hand while he just says no to anything she comes up with. Derek is obviously scared but after Meredith kicks him into gear he has a renewed sense of drive to fix what has been broken. The promo for the episode promised the 'unthinkable' and a big shock which I did not find shocking or unthinkable. It was a bit of a let down in that respect but I was happy with the news which was not really a surprise as I saw it coming a mile away. That said it was nice to have a happy surprise rather than another tragedy as I think there has been enough of that, at least for a while.
Grey's Anatomy - Season Nine Episode Six - Second Opinion
Cristina is back with a vengeance and determined to be the mean Attending and starts by giving the interns dwarf names. The new head of cardio seems happy to just leave her to it which suits Cristina while Bailey tries to work her magic and bring Arizona back into the hospital. Jo, one of the new interns who seems to be the new Lexie, has a hard day with Santa Claus who will not stop throwing up on her. After having a breakdown with practically everyone she finally finds out what is wrong with Santa and has a good end to the day. There is another meeting of the plane crash survivors with their legal team and they are surprised to discover they plan to go after the hospital as they are the whole reason they were on the plane in the first place. Jackson and April continue to have hook ups that April immediately berates herself for until Jackson confesses his real feelings for her. It was a pretty good episode this week again, Bailey amused me with her little game with Arizona that as usual paid off and I really like Jo and hope she becomes an interesting character.
Grey's Anatomy - Season Nine Episode Five - Beautiful Doom
This episode was split between Cristina and Meredith as they both battled to save patients against the odds. Meredith on her way to work drives by a car accident that sees a woman trapped under a car and no one willing to help her. With obvious similarities to Lexie Meredith is desperate to save the young woman while struggling to parent alone while Derek is away. Elsewhere, Cristina works with Dr Thomas to save a woman who has an aneurysm while she still tries to help save his career. However, the surprise ending to the case is not what was expected and is so sad it leads Cristina back to Seattle. This is not a huge surprise as she had to come back to Seattle after a few episodes in order to make the show work as although it was interesting for a while there are only so many phone conversations you can have on a series till they get old.
Grey's Anatomy - Season Nine Episode Four - I Saw Her Standing There
This week Arizona gets fitted with a prosthetic but does not want anyone to know although Alex finds out and they seem to at least partly make up. She also seems to warm to Callie slightly as she indirectly asks her to watch TV with her although there seems a long way to go. Meredith feels guilty about Derek being unable to perform surgery and so stops talking about her own at home. Jackson's mum returns to perform a surgery with Richard and elsewhere Cristina starts sleeping with Dr Parker even though she cannot stand him. My favourite part of the episode was Cristina and Dr Thomas who Parker is trying to force into retirement. The dynamic between Cristina and Thomas is so sweet and I look forward to where the narrative is going.
Grey's Anatomy - Season Nine Episode Three - Love the One You're With
You can probably guess what happened in this episode based on the title and you would likely be right. April returns and not five minutes after telling Jackson she wants to forget what happened they end up sleeping together. Callie tells Alex to stop sleeping with interns. Arizona blames Callie for her amputation and is not afraid to demonstrate her bitterness. The final scene between the two was heartbreaking but showed signs of hope as I think finally Arizona beginning to understand that Callie is in pain too. Cristina is working with Dr Thomas or as I cannot stop referring to him as Feeny from Boy Meets World. They have a very sweet scene together at the end of the episode and I hope they continue to work together as they act well together. Meanwhile, the plane crash survivors get offered a settlement of millions of dollars which everyone is enthusiastic to take except for Derek after he visits the hanger that holds the plane. Derek convinces them all that they need to find out what happened and if they take the money they never will. It was another good episode and I am really liking this season so far.
Grey's Anatomy - Season Nine Episode Two - Remember the Time
This is the episode I was waiting for the one that showed what happened to the Doctor's in the woods, how they got out and what happened afterwards. Except that is not what the episode really did. Unfortunately the episode very quickly went through the events between last season and episode one of season nine seen last week. That said, although I was looking forward to an episode that showed the turmoil that each character went through I did enjoy the episode. It was nice how each character got their part in the episode to show their story and I thought Cristina's was possibly the most interesting as she is catatonic after staying awake for days and Owen does his best to take care of her. Arizona is having problems with her leg, Mark is feeling better but realises it is fleeting and plans for the worse. Derek resigns himself to the knowledge he will likely never operate again and Meredith will not stop saying she is fine. As usual Alex deals with his guilt over Arizona by sleeping around with all the interns. It was a good episode and although at first I was sceptical I do believe it worked having the episodes back to front.
Grey's Anatomy - Season Nine Episode One - Going, Going, Gone
The season premiere took place over a month after the plane crash. It was an interesting choice on Shonda Rhimes part and I actually think it worked quite well. I spent most of the summer reading spoilers just trying to find out who survived and whether there would be more cast changes. Mainly I wanted to find out if Arizona survived as she was the one I was unsure of and you have to wait till the end of the episode to find out. As expected everyone is in turmoil as Callie and Derek are devastated as Mark is in a coma and it is his wish to be taken off life support after 30 days with that coming quickly. Cristina is at her new hospital and Meredith is trying to get her to take a flight back to be there for Mark. Alex is worried that the new peds surgeon is going to destroy the program with Arizona gone. Elsewhere Meredith is the new fear of the interns and is known as Medusa while Bailey is no longer feared and has a very amusing new nickname. It was a good episode and so sad with Mark and everything. I was so happy at the end though to find out Arizona's fate as she is one of my favourite characters and all summer I was telling anyone who would listen that it would have been way to mean for Shonda Rhimes to kill off both Callie's best friend and wife in one foul swoop. However, it is not all happy news for the couple as Arizona is depressed and mean as she blames Callie for her amputation and I am interested to see where they go with this narrative but I do like them as a couple and so I hope they get back to happy soon. My favourite part of the episode was the tribute to Mark, all the way through there was a series of home movie clips from various stages of Mark's life mainly as Derek and Callie's best friend and of his fatherhood. It was very sweet and a nice gesture to a character that has made such an impact on the show.
